R.I.P Barnaby

my beloved bunny had to be P.T.S on the 14th Sept, this is the first time I have been on here because it has been an emotional week.

It started on the Sunday, whilst out of his hutch I noticed he looked different, but couldnt put my finger on it. He is a himalyan giant (i believe lilac pointed) and he had lilac ears and nose. the difference I noticed was that I could see the colouring around his eyes whereas I couldnt before. on closer inspection I realised he had his eyes almost shut. When I went to pick him up he growled and attempted to bite me (never done this before) then hopped into a tree.
I took a guess and thought maybe he was going blind. He was 7 years old

On the monday he seemed ok, just quiet, sat half in, half out of his hutch.
On the tuesday I went down to him and he hadnt touched his food and the water bottle was at the same level, and his eyes were fully closed. I called the vets and the call level was high and the machine gave me an emergency number. I called this and got told this was hardly an emergency, this was an expected thing for an old rabbit!
an hour later I went to check him and his eyes were weeping and nose was running! Rang the vets again demanding an appointment and the earliest they had was for the wed morning so I took it.(rang a few other vets but everywhere was busy!)
I had him on my lap and he was panting. Rang the emergency line and said 'I need an appointment now, I think my rabbit has myximatocis (sorry bout spellingg), the nurse said they hadnt had a reported case round here for a few years so unlikely! but squeezed me in for an appointment for 7 that night.

this had all happened before mid-day, and what happened next was so horrifc and i would never want anyone to witness this, let alone an animal to suffer it. In the matter of half an hour his ears swelled up and the purple colour changed to red, his nose stopped running and instead just blocked up with green stuff, his mouth opened because his face had swollen so much he couldnt shut it, he was panting like a dog it was so so sad. I put him in his box and went straight to the vet, (5 and a half hours before appointment) marched up to the desk and said please see him now, he needs to be put out his misery, this is animal cruelty keeping him like this, everyone in the waiting room just stared at me. I then took him out and held him so the lady could see him (by now he was foaming at the mouth) just to show how bad he was and they let me straight in.

As the vet set him down on the table he panicked and ran straight into the wall, so hard his nose split in half and all the coloured fur fell off in a patch . She then started poking him and prodding him, I lost it and was so hysterical! 'ffs! please just euthanize him now and stop the suffering its clear he has myxi just f-ing hurry up'

after the sad deed was done she came out to me and said 'we have confirmed he had myxi'-well derr I said that in the first place!!

I know they were just doing there job but it was so sad to see him like that.

sorry its such a long post. but I have been ripped up over it, I wish i didnt have this image in my head of him being trapped inside a prison, being blind deaf and no smell-he must have been so scared and at 7 he should have died happily in his sleep of old age, not suffering like this. What a horrible, horrib;e disease!
