Bonded?

Recently we got a new partner for my 2 year old female rabbit. He's still young, only about 11 months. We got him becuase he's a rescue rabbit, the people that rescued him didn't really have the space for him so we took him off their hands. I was concerened about the age differnece being a problem but when we first introduced them she was very interested in him and wouldn't leave him alone.

We got him on 15th may, now she seems to get a bit annoyed with him, when he goes near her she'll make noises at him and sometimes move away, he doesn't persue her, he just goes off and explores something else. He was only neutured about a week ago and we think she may be pregnant! could her hostility be because she's possibly pregnant or she's just not settled with him yet?

Any advise on how to help bond them if this behaviour persists?

They do get along occasionally and will sometimes groom eachother but for the most part it seems she just wants to be left alone. I've attached some pictures so you can see how they sometimes interact! The female is the Dutch and the male is the Himalayan.

Yes she sounds pregnant, she should have been spayed before introducing them, 80% unspayed does develop uterine cancer too. Male buns stay fertile for up to 8 weeks after they have been done!!! Do you have space for lots of baby bunnies?

You'll have to seperate them if she is pregnant as the buck will kill the babies. I suggest you take her to the vets and see how far gone she is, if its early days you can have an emergency spay done.

For the last week they've been seperated, we have two outdoor hutches and an indoor hutch so it won't be a problem seperating them or housing the potential new-comers.
I'm aware that the male can stay fertile for up to 8 weeks after being neutered and would never even consider letting him near the babies if she does have any.
I know it's common practice to have rabbits spayed but i was told that it was generally safer to have the male castrated than the female done. I was also informed that spaying is not without its problems. An operation to that kind of a degree can be dangerous and i wouldn't like to risk my rabbits life, but i shall do further research on the pros and cons of spayed vs not spayed.

Thank you for replying!

Who told you that?! Ive never had a problem spaying my rabbits, if you have a good vet and a healthy rabbit the risk is low. She is at much higher risk of getting uterine cancer than dying from having an aneathestic, i would never risk my buns life, it is essential to spay a doe. It will also improve her behaviour towards your buck, unspayed does are incrediably hormonal and can be quite aggressive. They should both be done to avoid any bonding problems.

Have a look here: Information on neutering rabbits

I dont understand if you knew he would still be fertile, why did you let him in with your doe?!

They are gorgeous by the way!
