So angry!

Well today I decided to go back to the old vets I worked in to get the histories for all the rabbits (including Charlie) as I wanted to have a look what had been done to him. For some reason I wasn't allowed to look at my own histories on the PC's whilst I worked there, haven't got a clue why but its just how they worked.

So I get all four histories, Daisy and George all checked up ok but reading Rosie I saw she had something on there reading "vac Thompson kitten both course" now if I'm not mistaken Rosie is a rabbit so I'll be going there again tomorrow to see what that was about. Everything else on Rosies checked out ok so on to Charlie, the one I was most interested in reading. When the bad vet done his dental last Charlie wasn't given any painkillers or antibiotics, next day I took him back to see the other vet as he wasn't eating for her to tell me he had an infection. Charlie was then put on Amoxycillin!!!! Injections to which I wasn't aware of or even told just that he was being given antibiotics. The day Charlie died he was anaesthetised to investigate his mouth properly and see what was going on, the vet found spurs which the bad vet hadn't filed away in the first dental a week before. Along with that the jaw bone was completely crumbled so he had no hope, which led me to read the last part of his history "hopeless prognosis, adv PTS...(next line)...died on recovery from GA". I just broke down reading all that I mean it was bad enough knowing the bad vet hadn't done a proper job the first time not giving him pain relief or antibiotics but then to read he was given amoxycillin whilst he was getting worse and dying is just too much. Part of me now just wishes I wasn't on holiday that week so I could have been there and seen the dental to make sure he had the drugs he should have been given.

Tomorrow I'll be speaking to one of the rabbit savy vets I now work with for their opinion on what happened and go from there.

Re: So angry!

kammie this is so heart breaking! poor Charlie, I cant believe they would give him to wrong drugs knowing you and how important he was to you. In my eyes this is pure evil neglect and misconduct. I know you paid a huge bill for Charlie which really is the icing on the cake! I would make a formal complaint to the vet monitors (I have defiantly seen this at my vets but cant remember who they are grr). I know you should move on but I really feel that until justice is served and they stop operating on rabbits you cant let Charlie rest.

Re: So angry!

Its not just that he was given the wrong drugs its that amoxycillin should never be used on rabbits it can be fatal to them unless for syphilis (only antibiotic to sort it).

I think tomorrow once I calm down and have spoken to my lovely new vet I'll be doing some research to get to the bottom of this. Its one thing not giving the painkiller but to give a drug that could have been fatal and not to do the initial job properly is a whole new matter.

Re: So angry!

It gets worse, I just read Georges properly now. He wasn't given any pain relief or antibiotics when he was castrated!

Re: So angry!

Really sorry to hear this Kammie, I agree with the suggestion made about reporting it to the vet monitoring body. They wouldn't allow this sort of treatment on a person so why do it to a rabbit? Try not to feel bad as you trusted these vets and had no reason not to until now.

Let us know how you get on once you've spoken to your new vet!
