How do you litter train bunnies?

Don't wanna jump the gun but my poorly bunny seems to be getting better. She's been in the house for 3 weeks so I feel she should stay in. I've had a litter tray for 3 weeks now and blamed her inability to use it on her illness. She's rather sit in it and relax!

I've tried putting 'soiled' newspaper and even soiled sawdust out of hutch in there. And perhaps I confused the matter further by giving her regular breaks outside where she usually wees. So if she's to take permanent residency she should really be toilet trained. Are there any trade secrets?!

Cheers,

jemma

just keep sweeping up any stray poos, and put the tray in the corner shes using. also enclosing her in a smaller space can help but prob best not to stress her at the mo. also helps not to clean the tray out too often at first like every few days

Re: How do you litter train bunnies?

Still having a nightmare with training her. She's done two out of about 20 in her litter tray. Constantly washing towels etc... anything else I can try? I bought a conrer little tray last night instead of a oblong one and some little tray pellets. Still, no luck...

Re: How do you litter train bunnies?

Is she in one room or does she get the whole house?
Has she got an indoor cage?

Would be easier for her to be in a smaller area as someone said. Then she doesnt have to go as far to use the litter tray so she might use it, and then when she is further away she might go back to it.

Re: How do you litter train bunnies?

We're getting an indoor cage at weekend. She has the whole lounge but sleeps in a large carry cage (temporary measure as we brought her in from an outside cage when she stopped eating and started snuffling). She is peeing all over place. Bought two different litter trays as I said before - she pees in all different places and only done in a litter tray a small number of times...

Re: How do you litter train bunnies?

I would buy a dog crate not a rabbit cage if you can find one, as the doors for the rabbit cages are quite high up and she might find it difficult to climb in and out of. also these runs are great and could be used instead of a cage if you had the space. and they are probably cheaper. Love that website - was looking at rabbit cages on there the other night. We have a run but fenced off garden instead so both rabbit have full run of garden. Clover's only in our house 'cos of illness.

Re: How do you litter train bunnies?

So I now have an indoor cage for Clover to sleep in - how do we house train her... do we put litter tray in the corner of the cage she uses yet? Or do we wait a week first?

If/when she gets used to a litter tray in her cage - will she then use it in our lounge during day? Does she need restricting to a certain area for a particular amount of time?

Thanks!
jemma
