Re: Off to the vet i go....

I can't bear to cut any of my animals nails, I have to take the hamsters to the vets to get it done.

Re: Off to the vet i go....

I cut the claws on my lot. With 6 rabbits and 5 guineas imagine the hastle of taking them to the vets! I do my dogs aswell as he hates the vet.

If I do happen to clip too low and it bleeds, I do what the vet would do, I use antiseptic wound powder and wrap it in a cloth for a few minutes, it usually only bleeds for a minute. Out of all the claws each time I may get 1 too short, which is usually because they move as I try to do it

Its just a case of being careful and if you have someone to help, it really is better! I have to do it on my own as no-one else handles them. A towel is always handy.

Re: Off to the vet i go....

I am glad all went well, I had a black guinea pig with jet black nails, I put a piece of patio slab in her housing for her to wear them down herself because I was too scared to cut them lol

The best trick is to take a tiny bit off at a time, unless they are REALLY overgrown you should only need to take a snippet off which won't be near their quick, it only gets close when they start overgrowing.

Pets @ Home do QUICK STOP which is the powder you use if you do cut the quick, it's an antiseptic and stops the bleeding really quick.

If you don't have any QUICK STOP to hand then corn flour works just as well it's just not got the antiseptic qualities in it, so best to keep an eye to make sure it doesn't go bad afterwards.

My rabbits need their claws cutting, I must get round to going out there and doing it, they're both white so I have no excuses lol

Glad it all went well though

Re: Off to the vet i go....

thanks beowulf,
I put a stone in there cage but they just seem to avoid it only time they stand on it is to eat and they just nibble now and again... hmm lol I put there run outside over part of the path in the summer and it seemed to work but not its got windy and wet they are inside more. I tried sand paper but that didnt seem to work hmm lol They are all indoor rabbits so they have there own room which is tiled floors so maybe if i put some stone flags down lol x

Re: Off to the vet i go....

Miffys claws are all white so I have been cutting them myself since I got her, But when i take her in for her jabs every 6months I usually get the vet to take a bit off just to save me the hassle. I had a guinea pig as a kid with 3 white feet with white nails and 1 black foot with black nails, I used to do all the white ones, then judge where abouts I could cut on the black ones + a little extra just to be safe.
To cut Miffys nails I usually get someone else to pin her to the table 1 hand over the rump and 1 over the ears. I have also found that since 1 of my vets did this in front of me, that its a little easier to pull the back legs behind them and then trim all the nails as u can get to them better.

I just work on a slight trim rather than a proper cut, if you are doing it yourself it doesnt hurt to take less of but do it more often(it doesnt cost anything) I would also say invest in a really good pair of clippers, Mikki ones are good. Lots of them just crush the nail not clip.
I have 2 Nethie Girls, and they are by far the worst to do mainly cos they hate being handled. Only my New Zealands have white claws, everyone else has black/dark. You just have to try and be confident, not their best friend at that point to be honest, you have to make them sit still not ask them if that makes sence, else its them who could get hurt. 2 mins of having to sit still is much better than a bleeding claw.
