Neutering Help!

Ello peeps!!

Well i took all my buns to the vets on saturday for their jabs and while i was there i asked about what age is best to get Stan neutered! She said 6 months, i did think this was a bit old personally. What age would you lot recommend? I know it is worse for giants to go under GA but i was hoping to get him done before he was 6 months old. I was just speaking to a breeder and she said that if i leave it as long as 6 months or longer then he may always have the urge and be a contstant humper! Is this true?

Re: Neutering Help!

Sometimes humping becomes a learnt behaviour, rather than a sexual urge, so there is some truth in that.

Most vets will neuter a male rabbit as soon as the testes are present, and if they are in good physical health and carrying a good weight.

My male was done at 4 months old, and hes never humped once. Its a very quick op, normally over in about 10-15 mins.

Oh yeah ive had Barney done before aged 4 months but just concerned with Stan being a giant and they react even worse to the GA apparently, may wait til about 5 months then x

Re: Neutering Help!

Just keep an eye on his behaviour. If he isnt marking, humping or being aggressive, then theres no need to rush into it.

Only neuter early if you have to, otherwise wait until hes more mature.

Re: Neutering Help!

I didnt have Peter done till he was 2 years old. I didnt think it was necessary him not having a friend then. He has never humped anything and has never been aggressive except once when I'm sure he just mistook my hand for toast!

I agree that humping is prob learnt behaviour and if he's not doing it then I would wait.

Re: Neutering Help!

No matter how much you try I think there might always be a smell of dexie around which might start him off when he is old enough...maybe when he little balls drop take him to vets and they will weigh him etc and let you know their opinion! x

Re: Neutering Help!

Hi Kelly,

although i have girls i think the general rules for larger breeds is about the same. My vet said that it only becomes higher risk with Giants because of the amount of fat around those areas. Keep him slim LOL! But i think its more safer than smaller breeds because their like dogs LOL

hi michelle

Thanks, i was told cos giants have a smaller heart than other breeds so it is more risky for them, i will just try and wait as long as i can just to make sure xx

Re: Neutering Help!

Helloo,

Whilst were on the subject - my boy is being done tomorrow and im just wondering whether it is best to put him back in his hutch in his normal surroundings outside or whether to have him inside in the indoor hutch where its warmer and I can keep an eye on him?
