Smile Pet Insurance

Hi All,

We are planning on getting a pair of Rabbits in a few months. Trying to find out as much as possible about them before jumping in!

Does anyone know of any Pet Insurers that cover Rabbits? So far I have found Pet Plan... any others I have come across dont cover Rabbits.

Also can anyone let me know what the average cost of neutering each Rabbit is?

I spoke to a petshop advisor who said that a pair of Rabbits would need 3kg of Hay each month is this correct?

Sorry for so many questions just trying to find out as much as possible!

Thanks!

Umber

Re: Pet Insurance

Not sure on pet insurance (all I do is put a little away each month.)
To get rabbits neutered in my area it cost £68.50 per rabbit

Not sure on hay either as my two get adlib hay, it would depend on the size of rabbit also.

Hope this helps.

Re: Pet Insurance

Thanks Bernie! Yes all tips are helpful to us as we are researching as much as possible. Our main concern at the moment is to see if we can afford the monthly out goings for keeping 2 Rabbits. We have already calculated the initial sum of hutch, runs, injections etc its just the monthly out goings we are trying to figure out if we can affors the last thing we want is to buy a pair of rabbits become attached in the 1st 2 seconds and then have to give them up due to not being able to afford them

So if anyone who has a pair wouldnt mind saying on average what their monthly outgoings are I would be veryyyyyyyyy greatful!

Thanks Alot

Umber

Re: Pet Insurance

Hiya

First off please do not buy from a petshop, there are an estimated 33,000 buns in rescues young, middle aged and old desperate for homes, all of my buns are rescues (i have lots of pic thread if you want to look!) you can have a look here too Rabbit Rehome - Adopt an unwanted bunny from a rescue centre if you see a pair of rabbits out of your area the members on the forum will help to do a 'bunnyrun' which means people will do parts of the journey to get your bun/buns closer to you.

They are quite expensive pets, I buy bales of hay from horse shops becasue i have room to store it, so it only costs me £5 a month ( i use alot of hay) plus i buy a bale of readigrass from the horse shop that cost about £10 but lasts months. Toys.... well ive bought loads lol food about £15 month for 2 rabbits.

If you adopt the buns from a good rescue they should be vacc'd and neutered already which saves you alot of hassle and money, the average adoption fee is £40 each rabbit and that covers both. When you break it down Myxi vacc every 6 months costs £20, vhd £11 at my vets each rabbit. Neutering at my vets who are very experienced with rabbits and keep them overnight is £85 for female and £65 for male.

You are much better of getting a male/female bun already neutered if you want to bond them. Rescues will bond them for you too as its quite time consuming and scary bonding buns!! Unless you want to adopt and already bonded pair.

Housing depends on whether they are house buns or outdoor buns, outdoor buns need a min 6ftx2ftx2ft hutch for average size buns, and they need a decent size run for about 7 hours in the day out of their hutch. Alot of people use shed/converted playhouses. This is prob the most expensive bit to pay for!

I have 4 rescues and they are worth every penny to me they need lots of time with you too to be nice socialable buns.

My buns are insured with the NFU about £5 a month each i think.

Re: Pet Insurance

Thanks for a fantastic reply Crofty! Yes we were just looking into rescue rabbits yesterday and think its a great idea! Do you know of any rescue homes in the Borehamwood area?

Strange question... the guy in the pet shop said each rabbit needs about 1 handful of Hay each day...does this sound right to you as I imagined them needing more?

Also know of ant horse shops in Borehamwood area?

Thanks Again!

Thats why i hate petshops, no completely wrong advise, they should have a handful of rabbit pellets a day as a supplement, 90% of a rabbits diet should be hay, its so important not only for their digestive system but for their teeth also. hmmm im not sure about horse shops around you, best to google it i think Thats great you like the rescue idea and that you are researching before getting buns, you sound like the perfect bunny owner to me

Re: Pet Insurance

If you are rescueing outdoor bunnies then of course you can, its only if they are housebuns or come from an indoor environment you have to wait.
