Rabbits with guinea pigs?

I know its a bad idea to let them live in the same hutch so I keep them seperatley. But what about in a large run? Will they get on or will the much larger rabbit fight the guinea pigs? The guinea pigs are forever trying to get in with the rabbits but I'm worried they'll get hurt.

Re: Rabbits with guinea pigs?

Hi,

From past experience i would not advise keeping them together no matter how large the run is just encase. My friend has also tried to keep them together and ended up with a mutilated guniea pig before christmas even tho the pet shop said they would be fine.

It always your decision but i wouldnt

Re: Rabbits with guinea pigs?

I've never had a bad experience, my guinea lived with my bunny for 4 years, they were always snuggled up and Meg was so protective of her if the pig went into the garden.

It must down to the temperment of the rabbits. I never once worried about my little piggie. She died of a tumor just before xmas and Meg missed her for a while... but she's ok now

Re: Rabbits with guinea pigs?

Rabbits are not reccomended to be housed with guinea pigs due to the strenghth of there back legs many guinuea pigs are killed or end up having to be put down due to being kicked whilst the rabbit is thumping or hopping around due to internal injury. They reccomend not to house them together as also some rabbit feed contains some ingrediants not suitable for the G-pigs. Also some rabbits can carry a bacteria in there months/throat thats harmful to the g-pigs. Although many are kept together and there has been no issues. I f you feel you want a rabbit with a guinea pig a netherland dwarf is more of a good size saftey wise.

Re: Rabbits with guinea pigs?

Hiya

It is never ok to keep them together under any circumstances im afraid....

Here are the reasons.

1. The dominant behavior of the rabbit often means the guinea pig(s) get injured and to put it bluntly they do not speak the same language and nipping ect is a rabbit method of communication.

2 They both require a different diet....get it right for the rabbit and it will be wrong for the guinea pig and visa versa.....potentially very serious for both.

3 A large number of rabbits carry a bacteria commonly called Bordatella which is nothing much more than a sniffle for the rabbit but is pathenogenic to the guinea pig and frequently the only sign is a dead guinea pig in the morning. It follows that 99.9% of such dead guinea pigs just get disposed of and no autopsy or subsequent investigation takes place so the incidence of this is probably much higher than is thought.
