Help re housing, food and temperature please!

Hi

Im back again for more advice...sorry!!

Firstly, i wanted to check what people would recommend is best to put in Barney's cage for bedding etc. At the moment i am using wood shavings all over the bottom of the cage and then i just put his hay in for him to eat or/and use as his bedding etc but im not sure if i am doing this right as i have read not to use wood shavings but these came with him when i got him. What is best to use? But i should add that he doesnt spend a lot of time in his cage, only when he fancies a bite to eat!

Secondly, he doesnt eat any of the pellets i put in his dish, these also came with him and i dont understand why they kept feeding him these as he just wont touch them so i am going to have to change. I read that it is best to change his food over 10 days is this correct? He doesnt starve though as he has hay 24/7 and plenty of veg etc. How much veg can you give them a day as i dont want to give him too much???

Thirdly, when we go to bed or go out to work Barney is left in our kitchen/conservatory and it is very very cold in there at these times until we come home and put the heating on. He has a blanket and things to lie on as the floor is all gloss tiles but i was just worrying that he might be too cold in there, does the cold bother them a lot? Im not sure how to keep him warm in there and worry in case he is too cold! Any ideas?

Sorry for the long detail and hope somebody can help and hopefully i will get there in the end! xx

Hi Kelly,

I used to use vetbed on the bottom of my house buns dog crate - i found woodshavings got everywhere and used to irritate their noses. I also dont think its very good for soaking wees up!! Vetbed is brilliant for this, and you can wash it on a 40 degrees wash!

With regards to food, the best pellets out there are the moment are Science Selective which usually you can get at any pet food shop, they contain everything a bunny needs in terms of nutrients
I used to give mine a bit of veg once a day, carrots, broccoli, spring greens, Kale & Cucumber were their favourites! If you feed too much veg (especially cabbage) it can cause them to have poorly tums and runny bums! Dont forget you shouldnt feed rabbits lettuce, as contrary to belief, this is not good for them!

The only thing about heat/cold and buns, is that sudden temperature changes isnt good for them. Does he spend time in rooms that are heated, then moved to a cold room? Can you keep the heating on very low in the kitchen/conservatory so the temperature is regulated and Barney doesnt feel the changes too much?

Buns can cope fine in the cold - as long as they are used to it!

Re: Help re housing, food and temperature please!

Hi Aud's mum!!

A couple of people have mentioned vetbed and megazord so im going to have a look at the weekend hopefully, but might have a look on ebay or somehting as got a busy day tomorrow going to get little Dixie and bringing her to her new home!!

The only veg he seems to like at the moment really is carrots, ive tried a few others but hes not keen, he also likes a little banana and he adores parsley!

I will have to see if i can sort something out with the heating but im not too sure my partner would agree to keeping the heating on all night as we have a meter and it is costing us a fortune at the moment! Also in the summer it will be really hot in there so he will feel a big difference then as the ceiling of the kitchen/conservatory is all glass/windows so if its cold outside then its cold inside and warm outside then very hot inside so it is really gonna change a lot in there! So not quite sure what to do on this one!!

Thanks a lot once again x

Vetbed is much cheaper on ebay And it does last ages too so its worth it!

Fruit is another option to feed, i know some like apples & strawberries etc.. but only in moderation due to the sugar content.

Parsley is a favourite too - mine loved this with coriander and tomato lol!

I know what you mean about the heating, its a difficult one, especially with rabbits because the temperature change really does affect them. I guess you just have to see what works best. I think its great though that he does still have the run of the kitchen & conservatory at night and during the day
