Baby bunnies

Just a quick question......whats the youngest age babies can
leave their mum?
My babies are 2.5 wks and
are munching hay and curly kale, I'm trying to hurry weaning
as there's a chance mummy rabbit is pregnant again :-/ so the babies might need to be taken out from mum in the next week?
Thanks x

Re: Baby bunnies

Don't panic.
It is best to leave them with mum until they are 8 weeks, but I've known babies to be fine when weaned at 3.5/4 weeks with supplementing their diet.
Don't rush weaning, she MIGHT not be pregnant, she might have reabsorbed the babies or you are lucky and she didn't take.

Thanks for that,I'm hoping she's not pregnant again but would you advise to take babies out if I see signs of her building a nest? (that's be this wkend). Don't want her to harm the current babies. Also, if I do take them out in the next week will I have to give them milk as well as the food they are eating. I really worry about them and want to do the best for them :-)
Thanks x

No only wean them IF she has another litter, if you have to wean them early some do well with a top up of goats milk and cimicat (it might be worth starting to give mum some now to help the babies get used to it so there isn't so much of a shock on the babies guts.)

But I've been advised to not allow mum to have another litter while she still has the current litter in her hutch so I'm to take babies out if I see her building a nest?
Where do I buy cimicat?

Re: Baby bunnies

the litter NEEDS to stay with her UNLESS she has another litter, you do not want to remove the current litter unless you have to, weaning kits early is VERY dangerous and you could loose them all if you do it, so its not advisable at all to do so unless you have to

just wait, if she has another litter then you should remove the older babies, you can buy cimicat from good pet store or vets, or online
Cimicat 350g, Cat Milk Replacement, Kitten Milk Replacer

the goats milk should be full cream

Re: Baby bunnies

I have seen young rabbits suffer will terrible bloat on both milk formulas and goats milk.

Dont worry until the 4 week mark, then If you can check on her every few hours you will notice the change in her behavior.

Let nature take its course they will wean themselves on to pellets and hay by 4 weeks

Kale could give them bloat also its best not to offer veg until they're 12 weeks old

Re: Baby bunnies

Appreciate your replies,thank you!

Today they've started to come out of the nest/bed area and wandering around so may be able to get to mums veg soon anyway, I've got plenty of straw in their bed and baby pellets just outside their bed.
I'll keep a close eye on mum and possible nest building, that'll be at the weekend but hopefully they'll be no more babies and these little ones can stay with mum!
Another question.....will mum happily build another nest next to the current babies? There's no fur left anymore in the nest as I've cleaned it out a couple of times as was rather soggy,so they are just in loads of straw.
Thanks :-)

Ok,well I'll keep a close eye for the signs!
She's had 8 babies,all very cute. There's 3 black and white, 1 grey and white, 2 pure black, 1 grey and 1 silver grey/brown.
It's lovely to watch them, mum is very chilled and calm and doesn't bat an eye lid when I peep at them!
