Hay as litter

OK, so my two are house rabbits and for the most part are litter trained. They have a hay rack but I also give them hay in a cardboard box. Now, every time I do this, both rabbits either sit in the box and poop, or pull the hay out onto the carpet and poop on the hay. Would it therefore be ok to fill their litter trays with hay, as long as I provide clean hay elsewhere for them?

Re: Hay as litter

I use a large underbed storage box as my buns litter trays and they are filled with hay.
Bunnies like to poop while they eat so it's the best way!

Re: Hay as litter

Thanks, I know it was a bit of a silly question but I just wasn't sure if it would work/be OK for them.

Saves me some money too, wood pellet litter isn't cheap these days!!!

Re: Hay as litter

It really does work out dead cheap.
I put a newspaper in the bottom of the tray then just pile the hay in, I then top it up as needed and change the whole tray every other day.

Looks like I'm going to need a deeper tray...Millie saw the hay, went to the tray and chucked it all over the floor....she's a little (well big really) monster some times!!

Re: Hay as litter

I tried one of them before but Spencer wouldn't go in. And with Millie being a giant x breed she had little room. Just used the old bottom of the cage I had Spencer in when I got him, it's massive and takes over the kitchen floor....but may work....fingers crossed the little devil doesn't throw all that hay over the floor!!!

Re: Hay as litter

I always used to use hay, but recently have been trying carefresh and megaszorb as I thought it would be more absorbent and it is only the guys have unlitter trained themselves and are pooping everywhere else in protest.

I thought its a good idea to keep wee and food apart to stop EC spreading? but my guys love nothing more than pooing on and eating hay

I put hay on top of my megazorb but I also offer fresh hay in a hay rack which is above the litter tray
