weather stuff

I have two house bunnys, they sleep in there inside hutch then play outside in the cat enclosure by day, but I am going to be slapping shade cloth and a cover for winter on it and I am moving them into it permanently in a week or so when i get a decent sized chicken coup /hutch for there outdoor bed. Soo any tips for night time warmth, they have a fleece blanket at night and stuff but will that be enough ? you lot have snow over there so I am hoping for ace cold ideas

Re: weather stuff

If you can get hold of some good quality soft straw over there then that makes an excellent warm bed. If you ever sit on a bale of straw yourself you will be surprised how quickly it warms up. They key is to keep the enclosure very clean and dry, and damp patches get cold very quickly.
You need to either have them indoors or outdoors though, not both. The warmth of indoors will make them shed their thick coat so they will be freezing when they go back outside. Indoors or out, but not both.

Re: weather stuff

When I had my bunnies outside I used to put newspaper down, then a layer of megazorb (to soak up any wee) then a load of straw and then I'd fill the hutch to the top with hay and they used to burrow in it and eat it so I had to top it up twice a day.

Also a snugglesafe or 2 placed in the hutch are fabulous. You heat them up in the microwave and they stay warm for up to 10 hours.

And keeping the hutch covered with a blanket and tarp is always good, or a thick shower curtain.

To stop water bottles freezing over wrap the bottle in bubble wrap and place a thick sock over it, worked for mine.

I'm not sure how cold it is in Australia but sometimes moving indoor bunnies to outside when it's too cold isn't a good idea because they wont have a 'proper' winter coat.
Here in the uk if we want to put bunnies outside it's usually done in september at the latest.
But if it's still fairly warm-ish there then you'll have no problems.

I hope that helps
