Rabbits sense.

Can anyone tell me if rabbits have the sense to go into a warm sleeping compartment when it's cold, rather than just sitting on a wooden hutch floor? Jessie has a heat pad under a false floor then straw in a tray with hay on top of that. There are rugs & mats on top & down the back of the hutch & the outside of the sleeping compartment has 1" polistiering taped to back, side & door. There is a hutch snuggle with a plastic front on top of all this to keep out any rain but I still worry about her being cold. she seems content to sit were there is no bedding. The run is the bottom deck, it's a 2 tier hutch so she is well off the floor.

Re: Rabbits sense.

If she was cold she would move to where it was warm. Bunnies dont really feel the cold like we do though as they have a nice winter coat on
Also will she be getting a friend? Rabbits are very social animals and need company. Having a husbun will keep her warm too!
nattylops and cowfish like this.

I'm afraid I don't have room for 2. The hutch is only 5ft long, 2tier. I feel there's only room for Jess.

Re: Rabbits sense.

a 5ft 2 tier is fine for 2 rabbits with an attached run of atleast 6 x 4, without an attached run its not even big enough for one bun

rabbits really NEED rabbit company, they are highly social animals, and as she is an out door rabbit it is even more important
the best way to keep an out door rabbit warm is some bun to snuggle up to

please get her a friend

Re: Rabbits sense.

I have found my George buried deep in hay and straw intheir wendy house.

When I had a rabbit as a teen it just used the "sleeping compartment" for a toilet. If this is what your rabbits are doing then they wont sleep in there no matter how cold it gets there far to clean with a keen nose.

Re: Rabbits sense.

Jess doesn't use the sleeping compartment as a toilet. It's aways very dry & not soiled at all. She uses a litter tray in the run at the bottom. She has a 20ft run & is let out daily for as long as she wishes to be out & she uses the litter tray even then which, is kept very clean.
