Question Not one new bunny but two? (A trio?)

Well Jasper has just had his bunny date. The rescue lady bought two rabbits - a mum and her 5 mouth old daughter. I had decided just to get the daughter.

She put them both in Jaspers cage - saying that was the best way to see straight away whether they will get on or not. Jasper continually humped both the mum and daughter. The mum chased him away but the daughter just sat there and whimpered. I kept pushing him off her and she was getting a bit distressed. After that they seem to be fine. They all laid down next to each other and the mum started licking Jaspers head. Occasionally they would chase each other around. But no biting etc They kept putting their noses up against each other - not sure what that means.

They were only together for about 40mins but I was encouraged that they didn't really attack each other - especially in Jaspers territory!

Anyway they are off to get desexed on Sunday and then I can pick them up. I was only going to get the daughter but it seems so wrong to separate them I was thinking of getting both. The rescue lady seemed to think that the cage and hutch were big enough. Jaspers run is 3m x 1.8m and then a upstairs hutch about 1.8m x 0.8m.

Just interested to know what you think. Should I get both, split them up and just get the daughter, or go back to the rescue and ask for a single bun? I am really not sure! Help?

(Sorry for the essay!)

Re: Not one new bunny but two?

Oooo thats a tricky one!!

Bless Jasper immediately humping them both! - Alan did the same to Lottie but she just turned round and bit him int he face! He soon got the message that she doesn't like it after that! lol!

Its a good sign though that they were grooming etc especially in Jaspers territory!

3 buns can live happily together and if the rescue are happy with your space thats good. If you can afford injections, possible vet bills etc for 3 then I think go for it!! I'd love 3 buns but don't want to put Lottie through anymore bonding stress as she's an old girl now (nearly 8)

If you can't afford 3 then I don't know whether its best to split them up or look for a different single rabbit, how old are the mother and daughter?

Re: Not one new bunny but two?

I've got a trio - an older neutered male bun and a Mum and her daughter - and it works fine. They are all very happy together. They snuggle and have their alone time as well and no-one seems to get left out.

I, personally, wouldn't split up the Mum and her daughter as they are bonded. They may miss each other too much.

Re: Not one new bunny but two?

Thanks guys,

I would love three but I have a couple of issues - my partner for one. After Jasper destroyed the couch he is not overly keen on TWO more! But I am trying to convince him of that they will be fine.

I am also worried about Jasper. I know it sounds silly but I don't want to hurt his feelings. Going from being an only bunny to being with a mother and daugher, I worry he might be left out - which is why I wanted to get a friend in the first place!! I am also worried I couldn't give all three enough attention.

Money for vet bills etc isn't too much of a worry. I have a pretty good, stable job. Could all three fit in a cat carrier together?

The lady from the rescue just rang and she seems really keen for me to take both (as you would if you were a rescue centre!!) She is getting them spayed Thursday and I can pick them up Sunday.

I am still really torn. ARGH!

Re: Not one new bunny but two?

When I went to the rescue for a wife for Colin there were 3 bunnies available, One was a lone bunny and the other two were bonded sisters.
There was no way I could split the two sisters up, that for me would be unfair, so it was see how he got on with the single bunny or take the two together...I worked on the theory that the two were ok together as they had each other so I decided to try Col with the lone girly....which turned into Cilla!
