Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

Can someone help me list the reasons why rabbits and guineas shouldnt be homed together please.

Trying to tell someone that their guinea needs a guinea friend and not a rabbit friend.

So far I have mentioned the diffrence and diet and the horror stories you hear about rabbits killing guineas. Btw its a female guinea pig and a 8 week old male rabbit.

Re: Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

I used to breed and show guinea pigs and here is an extract from a handout I wrote (hope it helps) -

Rabbits and cavies.
Often cavies are housed with rabbits, especially at pet stores. It is a common practice, but the advice from most expert sources is - DON'T DO IT! If kept outdoors, they are often considered as company for each other but a rabbit has very powerful back legs which often do great harm to the more fragile cavy! Also, they are different species, and in general terms should not be kept together as their dietary requirements differ. Rabbits can be carriers of a bacteria called Bordetella Bronchiseptica which does not normally cause any problems for the rabbit but can cause pneumonia in a guinea pig! Although not all rabbits carry this bacteria, many do without apparent symptoms so therefore do not keep your guinea pig and rabbit housed together!

Re: Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

They can be good companions, but a rabbit has very strong legs, and could lash out on the guinea pig. And both have different dietiery requirements.

Re: Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

They NEVER make good companions, they speak a completely different language, it makes no sense risking keeping them together at all.

Rabbits are a lot stronger than guinea pigs, they can easily hurt/kill a guinea pig without meaning to, simply by kicking out with their back legs. Also rabbits do tend to bully guinea pigs.
They also have differing dietary requirements, so unless you intend to feed them separately you will be neglecting one pet's needs: Guinea pigs need additional Vitamin C in their diets or they can become sick. But rabbits don't, and too much vitamin C can make a rabbit ill. Rabbits also carry bordatella, a disease which is fatal to guinea pigs.

Even if they do get along, you are still putting the guinea pigs life at risk. Bordatella isn't something you can vaccinate against either. They really must be kept apart.
