Our new rabbit Ethel!!

So today after alot of consideration we got our first rabbit after ages of planning!!

Her name is Ethel and shes a mini lop, shes gorgeous, we have had everything ready for her for about a week now, and we've left her in her little house getting used to it.

I just wanted to get a few hints and tips from you guys the bunny experts because I've had loads of different advice!

When should be start handling her and how often? (shes 10weeks old)

Should I wait until I put her litter tray in until I can see where shes going to the toilet?

What toys are best?

Thhhhanks!! Hannah

Re: Our new rabbit Ethel!!

I would leave her for a day to settle in, and then start handing her. I fed mine with pellets at the start so they realise you are a nice person. And then I just gently picked them up. Babies are generally quite easy to pick up, it's when they are adults they can be a bit difficult, so get handling early, and spend loads of time handling too.

I would see where she goes toilet, and then put the litter tray in that area. She should take to it then.

I give mine wood chews/throws, willow sticks, gnaw stones and willow baskets for toys and treats. I get mine mostly from here: The Hay Experts - Natural Rabbit Supplies & Timothy Hay

Re: Our new rabbit Ethel!!

Thankyou very much, I'm sooo excited, but at the moment have left her to settle in, tommorrow I'm going to let her hop around her new room (we've cleared out the spare room all it has is the bed and her cage) so shes got lots of room. I've just checked out the website and ordered her a few bits!

Paws&Claws : Just mentioned it to the oh! he thinks it would be a good idea to....ooo I'm sooo excited, we'll have to wait until next weekend though! would it be best to get another girl?

All rabbits like to have a friend. I would recommend you contact your local rescue and adopt a rescue rabbit. The rescue will help you 'bond' the rabbits and the rabbit from the rescue will be neutered (Depending on age). You should speak to the rescue for advice tbh. With your rabbit being so young, neutering would probs have to be done before bonding takes place as hormones can get in the way x

Re: Our new rabbit Ethel!!

Opposite sexes are best - but you would have to wait until they are neutered and spayed before putting them together. The boy stays fertile for a period after being neutered - I think maybe 6 weeks. They could fight if one is done and the other is not. You will be suggested by many on here to get her partner from a rescue as they are so many bunnies needing a home. He will be neutered and all you do is give the donation they suggest. Rescues can also bond the two of them for a fee too.
Jacqui

Ooops that advice has already been given ten minutes before me. Was on phone when typing this.

Re: Our new rabbit Ethel!!

Thanks everyone for the advice

As shes so young she can't be neutered yet, not until atleast 4months old (if I'm right), so we'll have to wait until then to get another bunny as she'll have to be done before we can get a rescue rabbit.... been having a nosey at some rescue websites though, so I'm very excited.

We've been to Pets at home today to get her some toys, I didn't realise they had rabbits for adoptions in there?! Has anyone ever adopted a rabbit from there?

Another question.... sorry everyone!! she has been letting me stroke her more and more, should I carry on like that and not pick her up?

Thaaaanks
