hutch question

Hi guys,

noticed I rarely post in here!
We always used to have rabbits and now i'm looking into getting a pair again, but looking at building my own hutch. I read that the recommended minimum size i 6 by 2 by 2 (foot) i this right? would it be too cruel to have a 5 by 2.5 by 2.5, bearing in mind that they would be out all day (fully enclosed garden and i would be making a secure run at the same time anyway?

orders/opinions/comments gratefully recieved.

I know when we had rabbits before their hutches were just bog standard pet shop hutchess but my dad made them fixed, enclosed runs and they were let out first thing in the morning and cloed back in at night

Re: hutch question

there's nothing wrong with that size. Basically, look at the floor space. the minimum is 12sqft. as long as you make the hutch to the minimum floor space, then it doesn't matter about the specific length/width/height. I have a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft and a 5ft x 5ft run for my two mini rexes and they are fine.

Re: hutch question

I agree with SEVEN_PETS its the usable floor space thats the important thing plus you said that the bunnies would get daily exercise out of the hutch so alls good

Now comes the fun part

Re: hutch question

rabbits are meant to be able to do 3 to 4 hops in their hutch
but i think who ever said that has never spent enough time with rabbits as mine easily hop 2 foot.

really you need to have 2.5ft high so that they can stand up fully on their back legs.

a 5ft hutch is fine for small rabbits say under 2kg, although bearing in mind rabbits are active at night, it would be much kinder to attach a run permanently and put them on the patio. Many rescues will now only rehome to hutches with attached runs or sheds.

as i'm sure u know the bigger the better
