A Bored Rabbit

Hi i am kinda new to Rabbit owning, and my sister well has a rabbit, its a house rabbit, we have a pretty big cage for it, but we only let it out when my little sister and i come home from school, my mom doesn't really like her out cause she isn't really litter trained yet, she usually stays in her cage all night when we sleep, and morning when everyone is at school or work. I occasionally drive home from school for lunch to make her run around a bit. Anyways what my little sister is asking is what can we put in her cage to make her not be bored, we only have hay, food, and water in it, and she usually lays on her belly all day in there.. Any ideas?

Re: A Bored Rabbit

You could buy her some wood chew toys that hang along the bars so they dont take up space?
you can stuff hay into an empty loo roll tube for her to play with
same thing with an empty tissue box, and hide a few small treats inside too.

I have 4 bunnies, and none of them really like toys much so dont be disappointed if they dont seem to interested tho

That said, Mine do seem to like the stuffed loo roll tubes

Re: A Bored Rabbit

How big is the cage that your keeping him in? It may be that he needs more room to move about. Rabbit are also most active at night so it would be better if you could put him in a rabbit proof room at night rather than in the cage.

Rabbits are also very sociable animals and so the best thing to prevent boredom would be to get them a friend-although I wouldn't recommend this if their accommodation is not big enough.

Re: A Bored Rabbit

alright well, we made some of the toys you guys suggested so we are trying them out now, and reason why we don't let her out is because she isn't litter trained. So we might buy a bigger cage later and install it in my sisters room so yeah.

Litter training is easy and tbh the poo is very dry so wont make a mess like cats/dogs... Rabbit will go in the same place but there will always bit the odd one piging about

Re: A Bored Rabbit

I completely agree with tink, having had house rabbits, theres no training needed they always go in 1 spot. rabbits get bored very easily, which leads to destructive and territorial behavior like chewing the cage bars, and nipping. small rabbits need a cage or hutch that is at least 6ft in length by 2 foot deep by 2.5 feet high, with constant access to a run of at least 6ft by 6ft or free range of a least a whole room 24/7. If you cant provide a room for her then she would be happier outside in a hutch/run combo

Re: A Bored Rabbit

if the bunny is still young let him run around LOTS! Even when your at school, my bunny thought it self to poo in a spot in the cage and it knows to go back in to poo or pee.

But when the bunny is running around let him run around lots without your attantion, just make sure its safe for him to do so, he will learn to jump up on you etc if you let him explore on his own, you know when your rabbit is happy when he jumps in mid air and flicks his head. My rabbit does this a lot, when i first let him run around the house i had stuffed toys, tenis balls, toilet rolls etc for him to play with in a large area Try doing this see if it helps

EDIT:

Oh, when it starts chewing on the bars and you let him out he will think that when he chews on the bars you will open the door for him and he wont stop chewing on them or rattling them for hours! Dont let this happen beucase you have to put things in the way of the bars to make him/her stop this is very unplesant and is a pain to clear up and set up.

Re: A Bored Rabbit

if he is going to free run when your not there to supervise you MUST make sure wires are out the way or covered up well.. I use these as a cover:

Hama Cable Tidy Easy Flex, 25 mm, silver: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I dont cover my bunny anymore :O i use too when i first got him but he knows his boundreys.. But then again, theres always someone around

Oh, bunnys HATE wood ground, i have wood and my bunny only stays on the carpet sometimes he runs on the wood.

EDIT:

I tought my rabbit the Abbuive ear trick, its where i lift him up by his ears

Not really! I just make a "Yank" like action at his ears (I dont really yank them) And he stands up on two feet really fast ....Then shakes my hand...
