ear mites?

Hi, just wondering if I could pick your brains for a second! My rabbit, Dylan, has started shaking his head from side to side, sort of flapping his ears a bit and I was wondering if it was mites? His skin/fur is fine and lives inside.

Thanks

Re: ear mites?

Rini did this and while she was at the vet I asked them to check her over and they looked inside and said they were healthy and had nothing wrong with them. They just said it must be a trait she has as an individual.. like something she does when shes excited or something lol But if youre at the vet for anything, it doesnt harm to ask for a quick check

Re: ear mites?

Hi, thanks for your replies. I had a read up on head tilt- his head is only tilted when he is flapping his ears lol and then he goes back to normal. He might sit and clean his ears after flapping them but that's about it. I keep checking his ears and they look fine. Maybe I should get it checked out anyway............?

Re: ear mites?

I had a rabbit Kodi who kept getting ear mites and she would shake he head/ears around and scratch, thats how I knew they were flaring up again. She wasnt all that handleable so I used to look out for that. The last time she had them I spotted her shaking her head in the morning and looked in her ears and they were scabby so I booked the vets for when I got home from work. When I came home, she was sat in the hutch and couldnt move, took her to the vets and she said she was effectively a vegetable, with 2 possible causes, either she had shook her head and hit it on the hutch wall and been brain damaged or although rare a mite may have burrowed further in and got to her brain. She had to be PTS

I would get your bun checked to be on the safe side if you are worried, its easily treated when got to quick if it is.

Re: ear mites?

Hi guys thanks for your responses Took Dylan to the bet this morning (got a bit scared by what happened to Kodi ) but he hasn't got mites after all, just a bit of wax deep in his ear that was bugging him so the vet has sorted that and also cut his nails for me!! lol Dylan knows he can mess me about and puts up such a fight when I do them.

Thanks again,

Rachael & Mr D
