Need an eglu or other chicken house!

Hi!

I have offered to save 3 x battery hens but I need to find them a house to live in - online everything seems to be over £300 for good quality. Does anyone have anything in the Cheltenham area they are giving away or selling reasonably?

Thank you

Me xxx

We made ours, there was no way I would (or could) spend that sort of money on a hen house.

Have a look on Freecycle or ebay for old sheds you could covert. Also contact local wooden fencing suppliers when they are installing new fences they take the old ones away & have to pay to dispose of them. Sometimes you can get really good panels that can be used.

Hi Maygem Sorry I haven't a house for sale, but chucks are extremely happy in a normal garden shed, or even a smaller tool shed; with a window that you remove the glass from and replace with chicken wire. Then you put in a suitable perch. and cardboard boxes for them to lay in. I would advise against buying an igloo. From what I have heard they are not rat proof and have problems with insufficient ventilation; though the makers might have done something about that by now.

Rabbit hutches are OK for hens sitting on eggs and brooding chicks, but they are not often made tall enough for keeping laying hens, which need a perch.
