HELP! Baffled By My Hens Illness..

Hi all.
Got this hen 2 weeks ago, she was fine at first...
Her balance has deteriorated rapidly. She's not perching and yesterday she didn't have the strenght to get in the hen house at dusk. Today she didn't even have the strength to stand. She hasn't moved off this spot for two days. I am not stupid - she is not dead, she's just sitting there looking sad.
Please don't have a go for not calling a vet, we couldn't find one that treated chickens, without going halfway down the country.
We've felt her crop, it is empty and just feels like an empty (not water filled, so not sour crop) balloon. It is very large. Does anybody have any ideas?

Re: HELP! Baffled By My Hens Illness..

someone posted a thread on here a little while ago about their chicken being ill. she said they eventually turned the bird upside down and massaged her crop til all this gunk came out and she was better after that. im not a chicken expert though so dont hold me to that!!

hope your bird is ok.. is she eating and drinking?

Yeah, that was me!
We did that with that chicken, yet the problem returned and we lost her..
But this one has a different crop, so we can't do what we did with Jenny, as we're sure it's not the same condition.

No she's not eating as she doesn't want it and even if she did, she doesn't have the strength to walk to the feeder. We've tried putting food in front of her, but it just gets rejected.

sounds like she`s just given up,i doubt she will be around for much longer, she`s probably picked up a virus or something.she`s not eggbound is she?? or maybe a parasitic infection?

Re: HELP! Baffled By My Hens Illness..

oh it was you! sorry! have you tried looking up some advice online? i dont know if there is much you can do. my friend keeps chickens and a few of hers went like that.. stopped eating, stopped moving then sadly died. she thought there was an infection going about cos she lost 4 birds in as many weeks but they all seem fine now. i really dont know what to suggest other then keep her warm and hope that she starts to eat. she couldnt be eggbound could she? im assuming that can happen with chickens?

sorry you lost your other bird by the way

Re: HELP! Baffled By My Hens Illness..

She has only layed one egg.. as she's only about 17-19 weeks. So I doubt that's the cause?

Re: HELP! Baffled By My Hens Illness..

We came to this conclusion - maybe she was eggbound and everything inside had been getting blocked up behind this trapped egg, causing it to ferment. Then the gases from the fementing food found that the only way to escape was to go back up the pipe, causing the crop to fill with gas. May not be accourate, but it's all we could think of.

We lost Bluebell in the late ours of this morning..

RIP Bluebell.
