Help!!!!! Egg bound/broken - ex batt

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help!!

We rescued 3 ex battery hens about 3 weeks ago(first time hen owners) and I noticed a couple of days ago that 1 of them didnt seem "herself" She has shown all signs of being egg bound (after reading up on the internet) So i did as advised, gave her warm soak for 30 mins, and put a little olive oil in her vent and put a glove on, this seemed to help as a crushed (soft) egg shell came out (no contents but she had done a really runny poo earlier that looked like egg white) I dried her off and put her in a box with bedding and warm towels and then she did a little squeak and another crushed egg shell came out tghis time with the yolk fully intact??!! after this she seemed to perk up a little and i gave her some feed with meal worms in which she scoffed down.
I left her covered in the box in the house alnight to help her relax and she seemed bright and breezy this morning when i let her roam with the other 2, pecking, eating, drinking etc, only on checking before leaving work she seems to be starting to show the same symptoms as before, staying still, eyes shut, wings only slightly down this time, could this be happening again? I tried to give her another warm soak and the glove technique but she struggled a little so obviously i stopped, dried her off and put her back with the others and she started eating and seemed perky again??

what is the best thing to do? ive read about giving asprin, pile cream, fresh yoghurt etc Im really not sure?

What survival chance has she got? as you an appreciate im really desperate so if you could get back to me asap with any info at all i would be most grateful.

kind regards

Natty

Re: Help!!!!! Egg bound/broken - ex batt

To be brutally honest any I get that are egg bound are given one chance, if it happens again I'm afraid I bump them off as it usually keeps happening, I hasten to add though mine are not usually pets, there are sometimes one or 2, but they are there to lay eggs and if they don't earn their keep then I'm afraid I give them the golden handshake! - probably not what you want to hear!! Have you had a chat with your vet?
