Probs with my bantams.

I've kept bantams for years, and really enjoy having the eggs to eat and talking to my girls! Over the years, I've not really had any probs apart from 1 redmite outbreak, but haven't seen redmites for a couple of years now. I regularly frontline my chooks on the advise of my vet, but recently, I noticed scaly leg mites on some of my chooks! I did all my chooks with ivomec 3 times, 7 days apart, but some of their legs still look bad, but I'm hoping the odd looking scales just haven't fallen off yet! I give my chooks apple cider vinegar in their water, but my little bearded Silkie bantam has had a pooy bum for a few weeks now, although she still appears happy, but I've just cleaned them out, and my Silkie had a poo and it was yellow and frothy looking, and when I looked closer, I was shocked to notice severel tiny white worms wiggling in the poo!!! HELP!!!!! What can I worm my chooks with??? I thought the apple cider vinegar was a natural wormer, and theyhave also been done 3 times with ivomec which kills worms doesn't it???

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Cider vinegar doesn't really do anything I'm afraid - it used to be thought that making the stomach and gut more acidic killed worms but it doesn't! I use Flubenvet as it's an all singing all dancing stuff - you can even buy layers pellets with it already in - I think it's called Marriages pellets - google it! Ivermectin is effective against most worms but not all - I know it doesn't do tapeworms, plus it's good to swap wormers every so often to prevent resistance so I'd give that a go. If the yellow poo continues after worming I'd ask your vet.
The best thing for scaly leg mites is vaseline or even baby oil - it suffocates them basically, check their wattles and comb as they can live on those too - the spray stuff is useless, apply vaseline every day for a couple of weeks - will also dislodge all the excess scales and leave them with lovely smooth legs!!!

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Thank you so much for your reply! The worms were not tapeworms, they looked like tiny roundworms! Is the flubenvet prescription only, or could I buy it online? I did read that vaseline is sometimes used for scaly leg mites, but didn't think it would be very effective, but I will give it a go! Many thanks again!

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Flubenvet is available at any farm shop/vet or online - probably best to ask your vet as it usually comes in a large tub that does tons of chooks! - your vet may be able to measure some out for you. Depending on how may birds you have the feed with it already added is by far the easiest way of feeding it, here's the link for it - Poutry Feed, layers pellets, chick crumbs and mixed corn, that's what I use now twice a year and so far it works really well!

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Thank you, that food with the added wormer looks great! I will order a bag. I have 8 chooks, do you just feed them the sack of wormer food, then go back onto their normal layers pellets? Sorry if I seem thick! Also, with the vaseline for the legs, can I do my 3 Pekin bantams using this method, as they have feathery legs?! Many thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Yes just put them on these layers pellets until you have fed them for, I think it's 7 days, as you only have 8 chooks you'll probably have half a bag left, so upto you really if you keep it until they are due to be done again or just feed them the lot - I don't think it would do any harm - but maybe cheaper if you keep it and do them again in 3 months time - depends if you have somewhere to store them.
As for vaseline on feathered legs - I would have thought you'd do it exactly the same as a non feathery type - I've not had feathery legged ones myself, but I did ask my neighbor who does, and she just does them the same just a bit more thoroughly to get the stuff in all the nooks and crannies!

Re: Probs with my bantams.

Thank you very much, I ordered the layers pellets with the wormer you recommended, and they have now been on them for nearly 2 weeks. It did say 7 days on the bag, but I wanted to make sure it definitely worked!!! What an easy way to worm them! It doesn't say on the bag how often to worm them with this food, but I assume every 3 months like my dog and cats would be ok?! My dad came over and kindly helped me smother the chooks legs in vaseline, we did the Pekins too, but it was just a bit harder with their feathery legs. Their legs do look better after it had softened all that hard skin. Hopefully it will come off and they'll have nice legs again, my poor girls. I do wonder if the Ivermectin did kill the leg mites, as the skin seemed to go very white after I treated them, but think it just needed the vaseline to soften it all up. I'm going to have to attempt to put vaseline on all their legs on my own now, which I'm sure will be a challenge!!! Thank you very much for all your help and advice!
