Chicken Help Please.....

Hi Everyone!

I have a chicken question... I hope someone can help.

My freind had 4 white chickens and they were happy and healthy etc.

Then 2 weeks ago she bought 2 brown chickens and put them all together.

Now the white ones are bullying the new brown ones. Pecking them, scratching them, not letting them near the food etc all the time.

Is there anything she can do to stop it happening?

Thanks

Re: Chicken Help Please.....

Whenever you introduce new chickens to an already established flock, you run into this. It's normal, however; you need to keep an eye on them daily. They can peck the new ones to death. It should work itself out within a couple of days. I had that happen to me and I feel sure they would have eventually made the one they were picking on so weak she wouldn't have survived it. My chickens are my pets so I removed her and got her a new friend a built a new coop for them seperately. Both coops live in harmony now.

I have had my chickens for a year and a half now and also have a poultry enthusiast club. Email me anytime!

Re: Chicken Help Please.....

Funny thing is that we had a flock of Light Sussex and I wanted to put some marans into their pen, we moved them all to new territory so no-one would be 'at home' and then watched them. Mayhem! The sussex attacked the marans and shooed them off. We removed the marans and thought again and swopped some older light sussex and put them in with the others... nothing, peace, they all got on! Hmm I don't want to think that my chickens don't like dark chickens but it does seem to be the case? Maybe they couldn't tell the difference between the new light and the old? Hmm

But off the subject a bit there, be careful, sometimes they will never get on and you will need to pen each away from the other or one will end up dead.
