Call Duck Advice Needed!

Hi, I'm looking into getting some call ducks next spring or so. Either a pair, trio or maybe just 2-3 females. I'm looking to keep a pond in the enclosure with maybe a waterfall. I wondered if I could keep fish in the pond with the ducks? If so what sort of fish?

Thanks very much.

All I know is that ducks don't eat fish. So you should be okay.

Hmm, I just wondered as maybe the ducks would excrete in the pond and create amonia or something in the pond which would cause the fish to die? I'm not sure really. Anymore help would be greatly appreciated!

If you think about it, you know parks and things with lakes? I bet those lakes have fish in and you often see ducks on those. I would advise that, of you do get fish, you get you get a hardy breed, like Ghost Carp, or Koi, rather than Goldfish.

Keep us updated, with the 'duck' porceeds.

Hope you found my comment useful,
Missy.

.. Now you say it about the parks I think you are right. Ducks do go on lakes where there are fish. I may go for it and keep a close eye out to see what the fish do etc. Thanks very much for your help.

That's what I would do. Just keep an eye.

Re: Call Duck Advice Needed!

Also, when I feed the fish wouldn't the ducks eat the fish food? Thanks again

Possibly.
Just feed the fish, with the ducks out, and see what they do.
Maybe put the ducks into their house, while you feed the fish, wait until the majority of fish food has been eaten, then let the ducks back out.
Good Luck.

Re: Call Duck Advice Needed!

Thanks, but I think I may not do it. Becaue I asked on another forum about it and they were a koi/pond specialist sorta person, they said it can be done but not recommended for a starter, so I'm going to leave it for now. But thanks for your help!

Re: Call Duck Advice Needed!

We have a big natural pond with Koi and wild ducks. The ducks cause problems as they make the pool filthy, they live on it so they would, even though the pond is naturally draining and filling from a stream so continuously cleaned the wild ducks seem to cloud it up so it is not ideal for the fish.

I would keep the two separate especially if a man-made pond. Our domesticated ducks need their smaller pool refilled every week or it gets yucky, so I doubt that any fish would survive due to the lack of oxygenation and the fact that the ducks eat all the vegetation needed by the fish. Refilling also means we have to de-chlorinate the water before any fish.
