Should I Clip Their Wings?

I have 2 new hens. They will be living in a shed with a large extensive run attached. But, should I clip their wings? I have a fair idea how to do it as I have researched it. It's just because I'd hate for them to get out and fly off, as they're not tame yet (I've only had them 2 days) so if they did escape they wouldn't be easy to catch.

Help!

Missy

Re: Should I Clip Their Wings?

I have never liked clipping wings, if you haven't ever done it before it may be easier to watch someone who is experienced. Make sure you only clip feathers and no skin or bone (EEK!) and clip a little at a time. Hens shouldn't fly off if your pen is exciting and well managed, they will fel safer there.

How did you get on though?

Re: Should I Clip Their Wings?

I agree, I've never clipped any of my hens as I wouldn't like them to be unable to get away from a predator if necessary, and all of mine are free-range. After a couple of days thye'll know where home is, so if you need to get hold of any of them to check them over, you can go to the coop at dusk when they've gone in to roost and they'll be much more handleable. Given a bit of time, the hens will start to associate you with food and come running towards you when they see you coming

Hi i used to have hens and i agree with whats been said, they will get to associate you as their provider of food and will see you and run towards you (its so cute)

I never clipped any of my hens wings just in case the local foxes fancied them as they got to my neighbours hens on a few occasions.

Re: Should I Clip Their Wings?

They are actually coming to me! I am so surprised!
I thought they'd hate me!
Yeah, I'm under attack whenever I go in, they always think I've got their treats..

Sometimes they're a little agressive when they're roosting, is this normal?
