I gave mine grapes - they would do anything for one! They also got lots of fresh veg as well as their chcken meal and some cooked scraps. I would also dig a hole for them to scrabble about in ocassionally. They also liked egg (cooked or raw if one of their own). Don't forget the grit though.

Just remember though their eggs taste of what they eat so don't feed anything with fish! I learned this after they stole the cat's food

Good luck with them.

Re: What Can I Give To My Chickens As Treats?

We had 2 Rhode Islands and a bantam. The bantam caught a mouse and snapped its neck with a flick of her head. The other two thought it looked interesting so started chasing her round the garden with me tagging on the end - I didn't want mouse flavoured eggs! I eventually caught her but it must have looked very funny . Where's a video camera when you want one!

I never tried mine with tomatoes, I might try them when I can persuade OH to let me have some more.

They loved the grapes! They like a little flapjack, aswell!
I bought them a small, 1kg, bag of mixed corn so they enjoy a little of that every now and then.

Re: What Can I Give To My Chickens As Treats?

My chicken comes in the house and pinches the dog biscuits. I remember her mugging the cat for a mouse once and ran around the garden with it for ages with me trying to catch her.
It was like something out of monty python.

Fruit, grapes, tomatoes etc can give them the runs so not too much. What else do you feed them on? Layers pellets?

Don't feed them raw eggs - they can get a taste for them and start eating their own eggs. Once this starts, it's next to impossible to stop them doing it. Net result - no eggs for you

Mixed corn is a great scratch feed last thing in the evening, especially on cold nights because the corn burns slowly in the digestive tract and gives them a bit of extra warmth overnight. Bread soaked in water or milk (not too much milk, they can't digest lactose very easily) is popular with my bunch, also porridge made with water and a bit of Poultry Spice mixed in. Marmite on toast is a good pick-me-up, I chop it into little bits for them. Leftover cabbage or lettuce is also good.
