Talking New Duck Owner Come Monday

Hey, I've been searching the web for a place I could chit-chat with other duck owners, and maybe get some help with some questions I should possibly have.

Anyways, Monday I plan on buying myself two Pekin ducks, who I'm assuming based on the information given to me were born February 27th, and are now a week and three days old (will be a week/five on Monday). I have my stuff pretty much set up. I borrowed an aquarium from my friend, laid down four old, soft-from-wear shirts as bedding, snagged two heat lamps and two bulbs for the little buggers, and also cut off the top of a Girl Scouts Cookie box to hold the food.

All I have to do is set up a water dish, which I will see if my Grandma will let me have a tableware container that she wont be needing. My dad and I will be turning this Dog Kennel he has behind is garage (looks more like a chicken coop to me) into a Duck House for the little guys for when they get older and we have to put them away at night.

I live in Roseville, Michigan, and the only real threat I can see for the ducks would be a stray dog who somehow manages to get into the yard and stray cats. But during the day they would have free roam over the backyard, with a baby pool Dad intends on buying, plus we're setting up a Garden so they can snack on that.

I'll put up some pictures when I get them

Re: New Duck Owner Come Monday

I noticed that the little buggers poop quite a bit, and seem to make a mess of their food. I'm still in High School, and both parents are at work all day until six (I get out at three). I was wondering if there was anyway I could put them on some sort of schedule?

I was thinking either, let them eat between six and seven am (before I leave), then when I come back around 3:30-4:30 (latest), give them food for three hours.

Or should I give them food before I leave in the morning (seven), let them have it until I get back? Or until 7pm?

I'm just wondering, because I dont want them to just eat and eat and eat if they're not supposed to and it seems like that's all they were doing yesterday and last night (I got them a day early).

Re: New Duck Owner Come Monday

Ducks Main Diet Is Grass And Bugs,
So Keep Them Out Side As Much As Possible. Ducks Only Need A Handful Of Corn In The Morning And In The Evening, In The Winter, Because There Is Not That Much Out Side To Eat, When Things Start Growing Out Side, Only Feed Them Corn Once A Day.

Re: New Duck Owner Come Monday

Like actual corn seeds? Cause I'm starting a garden as well (which they'll enjoy I'm sure) and Corn just happens to be one of the things I am growing. So I could just gather the corn and take the individual seeds out and toss it to 'em every now and then, or just the whole stalk?

Re: New Duck Owner Come Monday

Go To Your Local Co-op / Feed Store, And Ask Them For A Bag Of Whole Corn Or Cracked Corn, Its Only A Few Dollars And It Will Last You A Long Time, Then Give Your Ducks A Hand Full Of Corn In The Morning And In The Evening. Other Than That Losts Of Fresh Water, Grass Out Side Or Greens, And Bugs. You Will Have Very Happy And Healthy Ducks, My Ducks Prefer Whole Corn.
