Re: Smell??
What size yard do you have?, how many birds do you have?, how close are the neighbors?, and are you in the countryside?
I'm afraid livestock do smell and if you are in a residential area with close neighbors then they are quite within their rights to complain - the smell of the countryside is not to everyones taste and not something you want to be sitting in your garden smelling at close range or being pooped on by pigeons if you have chosen to live in a built up area!!! - if they are very close and have not complained about the noise then they are pretty understanding people but maybe the smell has just pushed them too far? It is fine to have these animals if you are in an isolated area and don't inflict others with your hobbies consequences but when neighbors are involved you have to see things from their point of view too so everyone gets along so you just need to find a compromise. If you have alot of birds in a small area then the smell will soon build up no matter how much you clean - ducks and chickens in particular do smell pretty strongly and do make an awful mess. Pigeons are some of the worst - I would never keep them if I had neighbors as they not only breed like crazy and poop for britain but they are mobile so can poop over other peoples property too and do carry a good few diseases, not to mention where ever there are birds there are rats and mice. If I were you and if your neighbors are very close by then I'd get rid of the pigeons and see if that at least placates them, also what do you do with all the poop after you clean out your birds? Sorry if that's not what you want to hear but yes your yard will smell like a zoo - as does everyones property who has livestock - I know my farm does!!! ![]() ![]()

Re: Smell??
About the pigeons
![]() They had never ever got anywhere in their property, but I agree with you about pigeons having the worst smell ever!! In fact, the smell had only got stronger when the pigeons had reproduced like rabbits!! And the ducks and chickens don't only stay in the backyard, they roam all over the house like in the garage and the garden ( I won't call it a garden anymore, I think you know why!!) I sold a lot of my pigeons today... Keeping those things was never what I wanted, long time a I asked my dad if I have diamond doves... But he got soooooooooooo annoying and brought me pigeons, why?? just Because they are cheaper for an example... A pair of diamond dove would cost about 120-180 DH, while a pair of Pakistani pigeons will cost only 20- 40 DH.... So I blame him for this embarrassing situation I'm in now If I did a new cleaning day for my backyard will it reduce the smell? |

Re: Smell??
I think it would help.
We have only chickens, and when it's been wet out for a number of days they do smell. I wait until a dry (ish) day and dig over their patch, removing the worst of the guano which i dig into the compost heap. Then fresh wood chips (from the council's garden centre) in their run and a *very* good hose down of their henhouse area while they are out free ranging. Also, a cracked garlic clove in their water dish several times a week seems to help, as does bokashi bran. |
