Duck and ducklings behavior.

Hi;
I have this female Duck that have been incubating her clutch for awhile, and the eggs will reach the 28th day at Wednesday (21first September), so it's only few day away, so I wanted to know everything about the motherhood of Ducks. Do ducks look after thier young as good as Chickens? I'll really hope that someone helps me with this.
This is the only place I now where I can get some good answers.

Re: Duck and ducklings behavior.

If she has sat on them this long then she should be a good mother, and yes they look after their ducklings just the same as a hen does.
Just make sure they are somewhere rat proof as ducks aren't very good at keeping them away! Where are they kept? - do you have a pen for them?

Yes, of course I have a pen for them!! Right Now she is incubating her eggs inside the pigeon Aviary and well hidden, And she is quit cranky recently she started pecking at pigeons and chasing away the rabbits whenever she sees them!
Is there any advice for what I should do before or after the eggs hatch?

Re: Duck and ducklings behavior.

I find it depends a lot on the breed as to whether ducks make good mums. My Indian runner girls were absolutely useless most of the time but my muscovies are fantastic and nothing is getting near their babies

Just make sure you don't give them access to a pond/water tray for a week or so. I always just give mine a plastic or metal drinker to start with as I have had a tiny duckling drown before in a tray I really didnt think he would be able to get into I always give duck starter crumbs for about a week and then change to duck grower pellets.

I have oodles of ducklings at the moment, they are just ADORABLE !!
