2 x Rescue ducks please help :)

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site so here goes...

we have just rescued 2 baby ducks! I couldn't see them harmed and me being the soft touch I am gave in and said yes

We have been told they were born on 1st May 2011. Were not quite sure what breed they are, i have attemped to attach a picture at the bottom on this thread. I am not sure if they are male or female or how to tell as it's not very obvious

If anyone has got any tips on what food they should be on at this age and the amount this would be great help. We are feeding them duck pellets at the moment bought from our local pet store. Filling it in the morning, keeping topped up and removing the food bowl at night as previously advised.

They seem to be scratching alot which I am guessing is their new feathers coming through?

Any advice from anyone would be great help.... I think we have rescued every other animal known to man but never ducks... I must be mad!

Thank you

Charmaine & Marie

Hi

From when they were born makes them 5 weeks old, You can give them layers pellets now.
Some people might say give them growers pellets fom 4 weeks to 16 weeks then layers after that but giving them growers makes their bodys grow bigger before their legs.

I just give my ducks a bowl full and they eat it when ever they want to but mine free range aswell round the garden
just make sure they have fresh water every day.

dont give them bread its not good for them

You will be able to tell the sex of them from around 6-8weeks if its a female it will quack and a male will squeeks plus when the adult feather have fully come though the male will have a feather that flicks up and the bottom end.

Re: 2 x Rescue ducks please help :)

Yea I have read somewere bread is a no go!

We are in the middle of duck proofing the garden it was all abit of a rush job agreed to have them in the morning and they turned up on the evening.

We have got them in a very large chicken hut at the moment but let them out while we are watching, i'm a little weary of the neighbours cats while we are not watching them.
I can also see us having no grass or bugs left by the end of the week they seem to be going mad for it.

I think the previous owners have kept them in a cat box in the house up until we had them yesterday, so also need to get them used to being outside.

thanks

Charmaine

Yeah they will be fine outside now ducklings come off heat around 4 weeks old.

You will be fine with the grass 2 ducks shouldnt make much difference, 2 of my ducks are on grass at the bottom of my garden and its due for a cut badly.

Re: 2 x Rescue ducks please help :)

How long do they live?
Is it ok to only have 1 duck or do they need a friend?
What food to feed them?
What food to not feed them?
Is it cruel to have them indoors or do they definately need a garden/pond?
When hes grown up and if i open door would he fly out into the wild and never come back?

erm.....i'll think of some more questions.

Hi

Ducks can live upto 15years depend on breed.

Its best to have a friend as it will get lonely unless you are going to keep it company most of the day.

FOOD - chick crumb upto 4weeks old then layers mash/pellets.
click on my website im making its not competely finish yet and go to looking after ducks it will give you abit of info on food and what not to give them.
You can keep him in your house if you want but he will crap everywhere lol, best to be in the garden really.
depend on breed they dont need a pond.

I need to know what breed of duck it is before i can say if it will fly away or not.
