Introducing a new cockerel

Hopefully we will be getting a Gold Brahma cockerel next week & I just wanted some tips regarding introducing him to our three girls (ex batts)

They have quite a large section of the garden fenced off for them which also has a few bushes & a tree so there is plenty of room to move around & to hide. They also have access to their coop during the day so do I just put him in with them & hope for the best? Do it gradually?

The girls are quite confident & don't seem easily scared - they have no probs even when the dogs come over to see them so don't think they'll be too fazed by the cockerel, I'm more worried they will pick on him!

Also, do I keep them all in the coop together at night? I will check with the lady who is rehoming him to us but just wanted to check we do everything right regarding the introductions

Re: Introducing a new cockerel

yes they are fine to be kept together all the time he will want to be with the girls

when you put him in feathers will fly when they sort the pecking order out he will be the boss and they will get used to that quick

make sure you go in with them from day one of getting him so to keep he tame and used to you being there so he dont get over protective of them

Re: Introducing a new cockerel

Thanks. Apparently he's quite friendly but will make sure that he gets used to us being in his coop.

Two of our girls are quite fiesty, they chase off any birds that dare to venture in their coop but I'm hoping having a man about the place will be nice for them (although maybe slightly irritating at times if mine is anything to go by!!!)

Re: Introducing a new cockerel

they will get the ranking sorted out may take a few days and they will probley fight they wont do each other any damage so dont worry to much all tho its not nice to watch

some times it better to put a new bird in on a night when they are roosting as by the time they wake up they have just spent the last few hours together so its not as bad if you no what i mean

make sure you get some pics up
