Advice for a newbie

Firstly, hello to all and apologies in advance for any stupid questions.

I've been thinking for a while about getting a hen/s and wanted to check a forum to speak to people with experience rather than reading another HEN FAQ!

I have a few dumb questions and any advice is appreciated.

1/ I've been told that you should have a minimum of three hens. Is this strictly true. I think I have enough space but I would've preferred to start with one or two until I am more confident.

2/ Instead of going to a shop/farm seller - is there a place I can go to rehome unwanted hens or mistreated hens? I'm hoping for some egg production (just for personal use) but hoped to help out some down on their luck hens. I am living in Kent.

3/ Cold weather is approaching fast - surely I can't leave a hen out in frosty/icey conditions? What is the best advice for looking after them in winter?

4/ I have a cat, he is 13 years old and minds his own business. He has no interest in the free roaming guinea pigs next door - how safe would a hen be?

I am sure I will have other questions. I just want to make sure that I am able to care for them before I go out and get them.

Any advice is very appreciated!

Regards
Mark
Maidstone.

Re: Advice for a newbie

Have you thought of rehoming some battery hens. They can be in pretty bad shape at first, but soon recover and become some of the most friendly and rewarding hens to keep. Check out their home page below.
Battery Hen Welfare Trust

I had a completely bold girl last winter and she went out every day even in the snow. All mine are ex bats and once they get a taste of freedom they won't go in, whatever the weather is throwing at them
