Re: The Chickens Are Coming!

Oooooh no I am so jealous! We gave our chucks away when we moved down here as no space

We found with ours it was a lot easier to have two water feeders and put a fresh one down each morning because they would get mud in it or knock it over if they got excited Saves scrubbing it clean and putting the same one back out daily.

We had three hens and one rooster last and used to sprinkle all the pellets and some corn else one girlie would bully the others (including rooster boy!) and not let them have anything funny sod, but you do have to be a little more wary of rats if you're just chucking it about, not that most chickens will intentionally leave any food anyway

We never bought anything for our chickens because they got all of our leftovers, we used to put them all in a bowl through the day and give them to them next morning. They absolutely ADORED boiled potato peelings but naturally you wouldn't give them anything with green on. TBH we just did want the farm we got them from told us to do so it might not have all been fantastically correct but they did well and really loved our leftovers, its horrible putting things in the bin/compost here

I like your names

Our last ones were (girls, two rhode islands and a buff orpington) Conrad, Syth and Blondie, and the rooster was Blondie 2 (buff orpington he was LUSH better than photos show). Before that we've had a couple Elvis's, a Dennis, Dragon, Midnight, Moondust, Martini, Smartie, Hedwig, Blossom all silly things We had 10 bantems once they were soooo cute but met an end thanks to our neighbour, eek!

Re: The Chickens Are Coming!

I'm really looking forward to getting them, I was looking at other breeds on another thread posted on here a while ago. The Buff Orpingtons are beautiful - maybe I could get one of those aswell.......

Luckily my OH will be off for a few weeks yet so can make sure the dogs get used to them, they don't usually bark at the chickens we pass when out on our walk but then they never act as expected

I just wish I could give up work, stay at home with the dogs & cats, look after the chickens, maybe get a couple of pigs, some goats ...... that's obviously after I've won the lottery!!

LOL, don't worry, I think we should get the ex-battery hens settled first then I will think more about the Brahmas ... I'm racing ahead as usual

Will look forward to meeting up for a walk again but be warned that I will now be boring everyone about my hens as well as the dogs & cats

Re: The Chickens Are Coming!

I kept 5 bantams in my garden when I lived in NZ. A town garden. They were free range babies from a farm though. They loved eating snails. They laid lots of eggs...I was frantically looking for recipes for egg dishes and giving eggs away to all and sundry. Goood luck with your chickens!!
