hemcore as bedding?

Hi there,

I'm getting some chickens soon and wondering what to bed them on... I heard hemcore is good, but I wonder will the chickens need something more 'nestlike' in the actual nesting box?

Also if anyone has used hemcore before, I'd be interested to know if you find it composts well?

Hi there
Welcome to the forum
If you need any help or advice just ask, myself or someone else will help you out, there are a fair few people that have alot of knowledge and will help you out as much as you can.

For the nesting area you want to use straw.
I have never used hemcore but looks good stuff im sure other forum members on here will be able to help you out with that.

cheers mitch

Re: hemcore as bedding?

i have used it for small animals and its not great at composting! i now use bed down traditional which is brilliant! lovely and soft too. should be able to get it at most equestian shops and i pay about £7 per bag which i think is cheaper than hemcore

Traditional Horse Bedding - Horse Bedding - Bed Down

Re: hemcore as bedding?

i use shavings and straw for mine and they seems to work

if your house and run is kept dry all the time then some people use sand in there as it can be easy to scoop out any mess and mix in a bit or red mite powder all helps

have never used hemcore so cant really help on that side of things
i no some people that use shredded paper

its each to there own at the end of the day

Re: hemcore as bedding?

Thanks everyone - I think I'll investigate the options you've suggested. sounds like there's lots of different ways to do it
