Rooster questions..

Hi;
I have few questions about my roosters:
Q- my two roosters were raised together ever since they were chicks, they seem to get along well, but lately they started flaring their neck feathers at each other without making a fight, is this a problem?

Q2- after a rooster had mated with a hen, when will she start laying eggs?

Q3- is there a way to make roosters stop attacking the ducks and turkies?

Q4- I had read somewhere that roosters are usually protective birds... Why don't my roosters keep street cats away from the flock? The cats just come along and eat a chick infront of them.. Why won't they do anything? And is there a way to make them more protective?

I don't know if this will help at anything but my rooster's spurs aren't fully grown yet.
Any help will be appreciated!!

A: It's hard to say as each rooster is different, but don't be surprised if they do start fighting and it gets violent. I had two that were raised together and they couldn't be in the same enclosure without fighting viciously. Yet I have two that were not raised together and get along just fine and stay out of each others way.

A2. Again, depends on the hen, it's breed, it's background etc. Mostly will depend on age, day length genetics etc. You should start getting eggs at about 9 months old. Mating doesn't really determine when they start laying in domestics, they don't need a rooster to lay.

Q3- is there a way to make roosters stop attacking the ducks and turkies?
A3. No, you need to keep them separate. A rooster will assert himself no matter what species are in his 'flock'.

Q4- I had read somewhere that roosters are usually protective birds... Why don't my roosters keep street cats away from the flock? The cats just come along and eat a chick infront of them.. Why won't they do anything? And is there a way to make them more protective?
A4. As far as chicks are concerned it's the hen that does the protecting, if she isn't a good mum then they will get picked off by predators unless you pen them in. You cannot make a rooster more protective, nor a hen.

I don't know if this will help at anything but my rooster's spurs aren't fully grown yet.

A. when his spurs get bigger he may start fighting more. Good luck!
Any help will be appreciated!!
Good luck hope this helps!

Re: Rooster questions..

depends on the breed aswell i have rhode island red and he is a big boy and will fight to death for his girls and if anything is new in the run he will be 1st over to check it out he dose what a good male should but it really depends on the breed some are very protective others couldnt care less also the hens will ahev tere own pecking order and they dont need a cockerel there at all they will start laying around 16 to 18 weeks give or take again they tend to drop off in the colder months and pick up again as it warms up

depending again on the breed is weather they will go broody and sit any eggs
and just because the cock has been treding them dont mean that teh eggs are fertile and will hatch

if you have a good broody that will sit propley she will hatch them fine other wise if you want chick iwould take them out and hatch them yourself in a incubator

also if you put some dummy eggs in the nest boxs this can some times spur them on to lay dont work all the time but well worth ago if you want the eggs etc

hope that helps any other question ask away i wil do my best to answer them i dont no everything but what i do no im happy to share and help other people where i can

How about Drakes attacking hens, we had ducks and a drake once and the drake used to rape the hens. We gave it away in the end. To stop roosters from attacking ducks and the like you may need to give one away and keep the quiet one.
