Eggs in winter

Do Chickens lay as many eggs in the winter, as they do in the summer, or do they need extra or a special type of food?

Re: Eggs in winter

My hens and bantams ( total 15) are only laying 1 or 2 eggs daily at the moment. My 16 ducks ( not the 4 drakes) are laying 4 - 6 eggs daily.
I'm not that bothered as long as they are all in good health!
I am feeding them all layer pellets plus extra mixed corn and some bread/leftovers from my meals.

Re: Eggs in winter

They should really stop laying or at least slow right down, this is regulated by day length more than anything. It gives their reproductive systems time to recover If they have extended day length by way of artificial lighting they will probably keep laying. However it's worth remembering that hens (just as humans) have a finite number of eggs in them and once they have been laid that is that.... so the more frequently they lay, the sooner they will stop laying as they get older.
