How much does it cost to keep hens?

I'm just wondering for future reference really. Once I graduate from uni and get my own place, I'm hoping to adopt some ex-battery hens.

I was browsing an adoption/rescue website earlier, which said hens are happier in groups of more than 3... So, how much do they roughly cost to keep, presuming I got 4? Excluding things like housing, shelter and a run or fox-proofing the garden.

Thanks!

A 25Kg bag of layer pellets lasts me only about 7 days, but I do have 16 ducks (which eat more than hens) and 11 hens and 4 bantams.
A bag of non-GM layer pellets costs me about £7.60 and should last you at least a month for 4 hens.
