My duck is a murderer

Every time we have ducklings the male would kill them

Re: My duck is a murderer

Is it the same as wild lions where the male kills the cubs so the lioness will then allow him to have sex again?
My runner drake never did this but I only had 2 successful hatchings from 23 eggs sat on by 3 ducks (- I discovered too late about magpies).
Perhaps you could keep the duck and eggs entirely separated from the drake, at least until the ducklings are 8 weeks old and able to run away?
Good luck.

Re: My duck is a murderer

They can be overly assertive at times and may end up killing them yes. Best to keep them separated until they are a few weeks old. Is it one particular drake? Remember drakes are not usually around when the ducklings are born in the wild. Good luck!

My drake used to pick the little ones up by their little heads and throw them across the pond. Luckily they all survived and learned to swim fast! Drakes can be mean

Exclamation Re: My duck is a murderer

My old runner drake used to harass the females, and make their necks bleed a lot. He tried to attack my ducklings once but the mother stood up to him and i moved the ducklings into their own run until they were seven weeks old.
