what chicken breeds?

Would be suitable for us as friendly family pets & egg layers in our modest sized garden? I'd really like about 6, possibly 8, & it won't be for at least another 6 months or so so I can do loads of research first. I really like bantams but am not overkeen on Silkies

Re: what chicken breeds?

i recently got chickens this summer

we have 2 warrens - which are the usual battery chickens
and we have 3 leg bars

the warrens lay brown eggs and the legbars lay blue/green eggs that are very yolky and yummy

the warrens we got as babys and there like little dogs that follow you around

there are loads of variety out there, to be as pets and show birds

good luck

I love legbar eggs
I was looking at Marrans as they seem very nice but I also like the idea of having a rare breed like Norfolk greys (I'm a Norfolk girl )

Re: what chicken breeds?

Think you have to be careful of the number as our old vet told us if you have over 5 then they are classed as a flock and have to be registered with MAFF or whoever they are now. He wasn't going to treat my hen until I told him she was a pet as they have to be seen by a MAFF vet.

We had a bantam and 3 rescued Rhode Island Reds. They were lovely. Bantam eggs are fantastic.

Re: what chicken breeds?

It was a while ago and the rules might have changed as chicken keeping has become more popular but I would keep quiet just in case! I think it is to control diseases like Newcastles disease etc. from spreading.
