Advice about Hens

Hello,

I need some help about having hens. I have two and sadly her crow is very pale pink. Though she is looking about better then before. She has lots of her feathers fallen out ALOT. I have given them treats and apple cider vinegar though it doesnt seem to work. Any thing else i can do to make her abit more happier?

Many thanks for your help!

Re: Advice about Hens

Hiya

it sounds to me like your hen is molting (i.e. loosing her feathers). They do look a sorry state when this happens, but it is perfectly normal at this time of the year and nothing at all to worry about!

She will regrow new ones once the old ones have been molted

Re: Advice about Hens

Brilliant many thanks for your reply. That did happen to the other hen and a few weeks later she is fine and giving me eggs. Though the one who is molting is not giving me any eggs at all. Im still worried about her. Also the foxes are always trying to eat them. Thankfully they are in a converted shed.

Re: Advice about Hens

It is usual for them to stop laying during the molt as they have to put all their energy into growing new feathers and this utilizes all their energy

Re: Advice about Hens

It may be a while what with the molt and the dark evenings, she may not start again properly until the spring. It's much healthier for them if they have a break They all have a set amount of eggs in them when they hatch, so if she has a break it just means she will lay for more years.

Thumbs up Re: Advice about Hens

I have found that a mixture of chicken spice and garlic power given in very small doses can help alot to get hens back into shape during the molt.

Re: Advice about Hens

If she seems listless and poorly then a trip to the vets would be useful. Have you wormed them at all? Flubenvet is an excellent products and they have a vet you can call if you have any questions.

Contact information is here:

Def worth a vet trip though if she really is poorly.
