Re: A very silly question I am sorry
Chickens lay eggs every day but they are unfertilised so will not produce any chicks even if the hen broods them UNLESS she has been mated with a cockeral. If this has happened then the eggs will be fertile and baby chicks will appear from the eggs when mummy chicken sits on the eggs.
![]() That's the birds sorted now for the bees..... ![]() Some Chickens will go broody whether the eggs are fertile or not. My bantam did but the Rhode Islands couldn't care less.

Re: A very silly question I am sorry
Hiya!
Well.... who was first there: the chicken or the egg? Cockerels are still needed to get the fertile egg that will eventually and with a bit of luck and preservance of Mrs Hen turn into a brand new chick. If you want to breed your hens and wake up every morning before 5 am, then you will need a cockerel. If you prefer only the daily breakfast egg, your hens will manage this on their own ![]() Hope, this helps? |

Re: A very silly question I am sorry
A Hen laying an egg is like a human female period, because nothing has been fertilized by a male then human females have a period and hens do this in an solid form where as the human females egg is just bled out. No site has told you this because it's a piece of infomation that is ponintless to include because its just common sense. Hens are not like queen ants.
