candling
what do you use? I have some eggs in my incubator, and usually use a torch to candle (its not great, but I can see if they are clear or not) but these eggs have brown shells, and I am having trouble working out if they are fertile or not.

Re: candling
Hi,
We have just had the same problem. We were given a really dark brown egg for our incubator three weeks ago and I spent from day 7 trying to candle it. I have been using a mini maglite with the other eggs we have had (White and blue shelled) which worked beautifully, even with the really dark blue ones but to no avail with the brown shelled one. The only thing I could see was the size of the air space increase as the time went on (which, ofcourse, it did not with the infertile white ones which were dumped on day 10). We decided to just let it run and see what happened. Lo and behold I was topping up the water yesterday for its final day and a half and the egg started rolling and cheeping. By 7am today there was a large hole and by 9.30am our chick had hatched! You can get a high intensity candler but they are around £25.00. |
