Duckling hatched today, help!
My call duck has successfully hatched her first egg!
I have a few questions though - Firstly, she was originally sitting on 2 eggs, and when the duckling hatched this morning the other egg has disappeared, no sign of any broken shell, no sign of any duckling, can any one tell me what has happened? Secondly, is there anything I should be doing? The mother duck is currently sitting on top of the duckling and i'm a little worried, there is duckling food and drinking water available. Should I leave the mother duck to her instincts, or should I help her out? Also, is there anything else I should be doing? Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks ![]() |

Re: Duckling hatched today, help!
they can survive the first 24 hours without food or water, just need to be warm for now
![]() no idea about your missing egg, but i have a story. A few years ago I hatched some chicks in my shed. 5 hatched and the other one didnt. I moved mum and the 5 out into a pen and forgot about the remaining egg. A few days later, there were 6 chicks in the pen, and the remaining egg had vanished ![]()

Re: Duckling hatched today, help!
I always make sure my broodies/newly hatched ducklings and chicks are kept in a secure pen as we have a lot of magpies here that will take them if they get the chance. Obviously make sure they have food and water available but pretty much leave mum to it, I haven't had one yet that didn't know what she was doing. Ducklings do tend to spend the first few days keeping warm under mum and doing very little so don't worry
