new breeding and welfare documentary commissioned by More4

From "Dog World" 25/2/10:

MORE4 has commissioned an hour-long documentary called ‘Good Dog, Bad Dog’, to air alongside the channel’s coverage of Crufts.
The documentary was specially commissioned to look at the issues and concerns surrounding dog welfare and best practice in dog breeding.
Featuring contributions from practitioners and leading vets, it aims to equip viewers with essential knowledge before buying or breeding pedigree dogs, More4 said. It will also sort through the current debate about the health and welfare of pedigree dogs, and will look at the recommendations of the independent enquiry into breeding carried out by Professor Sir Patrick Bateson.
Contributors include Professor Bateson, the Kennel Club’s Caroline Kisko, former British Veterinary Association president Nicky Paull, Dogs Today editor Beverley Cuddy.
More4’s head Hamish Mykura said the programme would not shy away from the controversies raised by BBC1’s Pedigree Dogs Exposed, which led to the corporation severing its ties with the dog show.
“It seemed odd that the BBC didn’t want to do Crufts any more,” he said. “For me, the fact that it’s a talking point is the reason to do it, to make sure the debate is thoroughly aired.

‘Controversy’
“I’m just as interested in the controversy as I am in the show itself, and our coverage will reflect that. I hope that every side of the argument will get a good airing.”
The executive producer is Steve Anderson of Mentorn, and producer and director is Annie Kossof whose credits include Michael Jackson’s Last Days: What Really Happened and Robert Winston’s A Child Against All Odds.
Ms Kossof was unable to say when the documentary would be screened, although it is believed that it might be immediately after the show coverage finishes.
“It will be used near Crufts but I don’t have transmission time yet,” she said. “We wanted to make a film which would reflect on debate been in last 18 months and Bateson report. It is to be educative for the puppy-buying public, and will cover the topic of puppy farmers. If we can make people think about the responsibilities attached to getting and owning a dog we will feel we have done something.
“The programme will also cover what has been going on generally in the last 18 months, including the whole issue of health and welfare of pedigree dogs and dogs generally. This had all got into a bit of a mess, but it has been unpicked and things are now moving forward positively. The programme will reflect that.”

I'm in two minds about this. It sounds good, and it sounds as if it will be a professional and balanced approach that reflects the true situation about breeding and puppy farming and will give owners some insight as to what to look for when buying a dog. If they do all that, it should be a good program. However, after PDE and its "shockumentary" tactics that were geared more to increasing viewing figures than showing the truth, I'm wary of any other program of this ilk.
