Puppy mill pets 'come with unique challenges'
Potential pet insurance policyholders who have bought a pooch from a puppy mill must be aware of the unique challenges they may have to face, it has been suggested.
Specialists at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) have released advice on adapting to owning a factory-produced dog.
As the puppy may have been separated prematurely from its mother and spent little time outside a cage for the first eight to 12 weeks of life, socialisation could be an issue.
Owners should be aware that many new elements such as the great outdoors and meeting strangers could be frightening at first.
The ASPCA said these canines must not be rushed and that "patience and understanding" was key to helping these canines adjust.
"If you take things slowly and go at her pace, you'll reap the reward of watching your shy dog overcome her fears".
For the same reason, the pup should have a "safe area" - a bed or corner of his own where he can go to get a grip on his new life.
In the UK, the Kennel Club has also dissuaded people from going to puppy mills to get a new pet - but once the mistake is made, animal lovers may want to take the opportunity to guarantee a better life for a pooch.
