Owner banned for leaving dogs to die

Jul 31 2009 by Sharon Liptrott, Dumfries Standard Friday

A DUMFRIES woman who kept her dogs in “horrific conditions” has been banned from owning animals for five years.

Lynda Fedorec, 41, who has previously bred and exhibited Leonberger and German Shepherd dogs, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs and four puppies in her care when she appeared at the town’s sheriff court this week.

The shocking conditions the dogs were kept in was discovered when the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) investigated a complaint that a dog had been abandoned at Fedorec’s premises at Balgray Home Farm, Lockerbie, in February 2008.

Dogs and puppies were found to be kept in horrific conditions in a garage. One adult female German Shepherd was found malnourished and cramped inside a cage. Another adult female Leonberger dog was found roaming the garage with her three 12-week-old puppies, all of which were malnourished. A fourth puppy was found dead, caught hanging by the midriff from a cage.

Two further dogs were discovered in a kennel block on the premises. One was a female German Shepherd dog which was emaciated and the other was an adult male Leonberger which was found dead and, from the state of decomposition, had been so for several months.

Fedorec’s solicitor, Ranald Lindsay, said she had been breeding and showing dogs for 12 years and was highly thought of in local and national dog breeding circles. However, he also said that at the time of the offence, she had found herself in a distressing position because of personal difficulties and had been unwell and going through divorce proceedings.

Mr Lindsay also claimed that the German Shepherd had appeared on her doorstep at the same time the tip-off alerted officials and she felt she might have been set up.

Scottish SPCA Inspector June Chalcroft, who led the investigation, said after the verdict: “Although we welcome the sentence that has been passed, we are disappointed that the accused was not given a life ban on keeping animals. The conditions I was faced with when I entered the premises were horrific and shocking.

“The floor was filthy and littered with urine and faeces and the dogs were all very thin. No food or water was available for them and by all accounts they had been abandoned. Thankfully, we have found all of the surviving animals loving homes with responsible dog owners.”

Fedorec, of Queen Street, was also fined £489.

Re: Owner banned for leaving dogs to die

This is absolutely horrible. I don't know how people could do this to animals. Just because they were going through their own personally issues does not give ANYONE the right to abandon their pets and leave them to die.

I don't agree with the "5 year ban from owning animals" thing. I think she should never be able to own any animals again, and if she did and was caught, would have pay a HEFTY punishment.
