Exclamation Cargill turkey: ANTIBIOTIC-USE in Ag-Pharming is killing us

Andrew Gunther: Cargill's Tainted Turkey: Just the Tip of the Iceberg?

Quote:
Our farming industry is already 5-years behind the European Union, 15-years behind Denmark & 25-years
behind Sweden in banning non-therapeutic uses of medically important antibiotics in farming.
The USA-intensive farming lobby claims... such a ban would devastate U.S. farming & dramatically increase food costs.
But European farmers have survived, and the changes have not reduced efficiency of meat production,
nor have they directly increased the cost of food. In fact, one Danish study shows that the ban led to lower mortality
and higher growth rates in pig farming.

All this leads me to ask: is cheap meat really worth it? The gravity of the threat we face
cannot be overstated -- we are literally about to lose one of the most important medical innovations of our time.
We need to act, and we need to act now.

Angry the lo-o-o-o-ong delay in ID of the source & attempted removal

EVEN WORSE - the FDA futzed about for FIVE months before Cargill began a recall - a voluntary recall:
Quote:
...it appears the outbreak "officially" began in March 2011, when a growing number of cases
of [I]Salmonella heidelberg were noted. However, the FSIS didn't issue a public warning until July 29, and even then
this was a broad statement about potential links with ground turkey. Questions are already being asked about the significant
time lag between the March detection of the spike in cases, the FSIS announcement in late July, & Cargill's
voluntary withdrawal in early August.
the fact that it's SOLD as 40# chubs means it is in many already-processed products, frozen, refrigerated,
pre-made convenience foods, bulk-package food service items like blended turkey sausage, burger-patties,
meatballs, as an ingredient in soups, stuffed into pasta, filling mushroom caps, anywhere - everywhere.
WAY OUT OF REACH of any 'recall' at this late date; they've been made, shipped, & in many cases, sold.
