Thumbs up proposed BAN on fracking in Gge-Wash. Natl Forest, YAY!

please take a moment to sign the petition? Thanks so much.
Quote:
We hope you will be as excited as we were to learn that the U.S. Forest Service has proposed a ban
on fracking in Virginia’s George Washington National Forest!

The Draft Forest Land and Resource Management Plan, which will guide use of the 1.1-million-acre public forest
for the next 15 years, includes a crucial provision prohibiting the use of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking')
to drill for natural gas.

Tell the U.S. Forest Service that you support the proposed ban on fracking for natural gas in this beloved
national forest.
The draft plan is open for public comment & we need to show support for the provision against fracking
in order to make sure it stays in the final plan.

During the fracking process, water mixed with chemicals, including known toxins, is pumped down wells
at high pressure to fracture rock and release natural gas. Natural gas drilling using fracking has been linked
to contamination of drinking water wells, groundwater aquifers and surface water, like rivers and lakes.
Fracking also has damaging consequences for our climate, releasing vast amounts of planet-warming methane
into the atmosphere.

The George Washington National Forest is a direct source of drinking water for about 262,600 people in local communities
in and around the Shenandoah Valley. Further, the forest is located entirely within the watershed of the James
& Potomac Rivers, which supply drinking water to Richmond & Washington, D.C., among other cities,
and ultimately flow into the Chesapeake Bay.

Please take a moment to submit a comment to the Forest Service in support of its proposed fracking ban
in George Washington National Forest.

In solidarity,
Beth Kemler
Virginia State Director
bear in mind that OIL & GAS interests will lobby intensively against this measure.
