Jackson speaks his mind about the silly superstitions associated with black cats. His buddy Buster listens supportively from the background.
Hello everyone, Jackson here. Being a beautiful black cat, myself, I have a lot to say about this subject! It is that time of year again... The time that we, black cats, must hear all the silly talk. I am speaking up so you will remember as October draws near, and spooks and monsters plan their evil doings, the real truth about black cats.
The black cat has gotten a bad rap in this country ever since the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock with their devout faith and suspicion of anything deemed of the devil. They viewed the black cat as a companion, or familiar to witches, which kinda sounds scary to me! Anyone caught with a black cat would be severely punished or even killed. Yikes. Many black cats were sought after and killed. I’m sure glad we didn’t live then. If a farmer believed his land had a spell cast upon it, the only way to break that spell was to shoot a black cat with a silver bullet.
Thankfully, there is plenty of good luck associated with black cats as well. In parts of Europe, if a black cat crosses your path, you are considered to have good fortune. If a black cat walks into your house or home, you are truly blessed.
In Yorkshires, a black cat was said to bring the fishermen home safely from the seas.
In the 1600’s, Charles l of England owned a black cat which he fiercely loved and protected. He kept his cat under guard 24/7, until one day it fell ill and died. Charles l was heard to say, “Alas my luck is gone.” The next day, he was arrested and charged with high treason. Ultimately, he was put to death.
The origin of the black cat and good luck is believed to have begun in Ancient Egypt with the sacred cat of Oagans, Bast. Bast, a goddess of Egypt resigned in the Twenty-Second Dynasty and was the official deity of Egypt. Many courted her favors by procuring black cats into their households, believing that she would become part of that cat in spirit and grace the home with riches and prosperity. Now that’s more like it!
So, from just the 1 of the 14 black cats that reside here at Pasado’s Safe Haven (where by the way we are safe from witches and devils) I want you to rethink these silly superstitions about us and consider adoption. We, just like our multi-colored friends, make great companions. (even better if you ask me, but then I maybe prejudice!) My buddy Homer may have FIV, but nobody is perfect, I may have been told that I am a bit pushy at dinner time, but at least I get dinner going! Then there’s that lovely Lisa… she is a little on the shy side, but once she warms up to you, boy is she a lover. We are all looking for our forever home. Maybe you could consider one or better yet all of us!
Please spay and neuter all your companion animals. Think about becoming a foster family, or adopting, (even if it must be a dog), Volunteer, or Donate.
These things do nothing but warm your soul! But above all, Love and Cherish each one of your animal companions everyday, for the love returned is tenfold.
